Police clear Irish rap group Kneecap of incitement charges after Glastonbury performance in Somerset sparks political controversy

What started as a fiery performance at one of the world’s biggest music festivals has now ended with a sigh of relief for Irish rap group Kneecap.

After weeks of police scrutiny over a politically charged Glastonbury appearance, authorities have confirmed there’ll be no further action taken against the trio.

Glastonbury Set Sparked Police Investigation

Back in June, Kneecap stirred controversy during their Glastonbury set, making comments that some interpreted as inciting unrest — specifically, calling for a riot in Westminster Court.

Their bold statements triggered an investigation by Avon and Somerset Police, who combed through footage and audio recordings not only from their performance but also from punk duo Bob Vylan, who shared the stage at the Somerset event.

Police Say No Realistic Chance of Conviction

Fast forward to July 18, and the outcome is clear.

According to Avon and Somerset Police, there simply wasn’t enough evidence to move forward with any legal proceedings.

After seeking advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, investigators concluded that the chances of securing a conviction were too slim.

In an official statement, the police said:

“We have made the decision to take no further action on the grounds there is insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction for any offence.”

Kneecap Responds: “A Win Against Political Policing”

The group — made up of Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh — celebrated the news on social media, sharing a screenshot of what looked like an email from a senior officer confirming the case was closed.

Their caption read:

“One element of the political policing intimidation attempt is over. We played a historic set at Glastonbury.

Whole area closed an hour before due to crowds. A celebration of love and solidarity. A sea of good people at the world’s most famous festival.”

Bob Vylan’s Set Still Under Review

While Kneecap is off the hook, things are still uncertain for Bob Vylan.

Police confirmed that their investigation into the punk duo’s performance remains ongoing.

No official updates have been released about the status or potential outcome of that case.

What’s Next?

For now, Kneecap walks away without charges — and with their Glastonbury performance firmly etched in the memory of fans and critics alike.

But the ripple effects of politically outspoken artists on festival stages may continue to draw the attention of authorities.

As for Glastonbury? It remains a stage not just for music — but for messages, movements, and, sometimes, controversy.
