PM says will seek new nominee for gov’t policy coordination chief

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo stated on Saturday that he will look for a new candidate after a former official who was rumored to be the director of government policy coordination expressed his unwillingness to accept the nomination. “This is a choice he took under duress while conversations were ongoing.

As a result, I’m hoping that people would appreciate it “Han spoke with Yonhap News Agency over the phone. “We’ll get right to work (on picking a replacement nominee).”

Yoon Jong-won, chief executive of the state-run Industrial Bank of Korea, has been reportedly known to be nominated as the minister for the Office for Government Policy Coordination, which is in charge of assisting the prime minister. But the ruling People Power Party voiced opposition to his nomination because he worked as a senior presidential secretary for economy under the liberal former Moon Jae-in government.

As the controversy over his nomination showed no sign of dying down, Yoon showed his intent not to accept the nomination in a telephone interview with Yonhap earlier Saturday, saying he feels much pressure for drawing controversy in the process of verifying his qualification for the position.

When questioned about the qualities of a new candidate, Han replied, “A government policy coordination head should have a wealth of experience, a track record of success in his position, a broad range of expertise in numerous sectors, and inner strength.

” “I’ll have to take into account the issues that led Yoon to refuse the position.” President Yoon Suk-office yeol’s did not take a formal stance on the matter. “As he took a difficult decision based on contemplation, we appreciate it,” an official from the office told Yonhap by phone on condition of anonymity.
