After a year in Saudi Arabia, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is back in France—and he’s making headlines for more than just his comeback.

The 36-year-old striker, who’s rejoined Marseille on a two-year deal, is already talking up his new teammate Mason Greenwood, calling him “the star boy” and a “phenomenon.”

Greenwood Earns High Praise from a Former Teammate’s Teammate

During his first press conference since re-signing with the French club, Aubameyang revealed he had already heard glowing reviews of Greenwood while playing in Saudi Arabia.

According to the Gabonese international, a former teammate who had played alongside Greenwood in Spain described the English forward as “a phenomenon.”

“Honestly, I’m happy he’s with us,” Aubameyang said. “He’s very strong, very good.

I really liked his season, and he’s working even harder than before.”

Greenwood’s Career Rebuild Continues in France

Once seen as one of Manchester United’s brightest young stars, Greenwood’s rise was cut short after he was charged with attempted rape and controlling behaviour.

The charges were eventually dropped in early 2023, and he began rebuilding his career abroad.

He moved to Getafe that summer, notching 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances during his single season in La Liga.

That strong showing earned him a move to Marseille last year, where he’s since exploded—scoring 22 goals in his debut Ligue 1 campaign and helping the team secure a second-place finish.

Marseille Hopes Aubameyang Can Help Push Them to the Title

With Greenwood already shining, Marseille are now hoping Aubameyang’s return can add the experience and firepower needed to go one better this season and actually win the French league title.

“I had really good offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, and even in Europe,” Aubameyang told reporters.

“But this was a choice I made with my heart.

I’ve had powerful experiences here in Marseille, and I want to reconnect with the fans and the stadium.”

Aubameyang Says He’s Physically and Mentally Ready

While some may question the intensity of football in Saudi Arabia, Aubameyang was quick to reassure supporters that he’s match-ready.

“I’ve worked hard. I’ve got a full season under my belt,” he said.

“Even if people think the level isn’t the same, I’ve posted a few things on social media to show how I’m feeling physically.

But the real answer will be on the pitch. Mentally and physically, I’m ready.”

A Familiar Homecoming for the Veteran Striker

Aubameyang’s return to the Velodrome marks his second stint with Marseille.

During his previous spell in the 2023/24 season, he racked up 30 goals and 11 assists.

The move also continues a winding journey for the striker since his Arsenal exit in 2022, with stops at Barcelona, Chelsea, and Al-Qadsiah along the way.

Still, many fans remember his blistering form in the Premier League—where he scored 68 goals in 128 appearances for Arsenal.

What Comes Next?

With Greenwood in his prime and Aubameyang eager for a fresh chapter, Marseille might just have the right mix of youth and experience to challenge for silverware this season.

For now, the fans will be watching closely to see how this new partnership unfolds—and whether Aubameyang’s confidence in his young teammate pays off on the pitch.
