We’re well into the’second half’ of the DStv Premiership season 2021/22, and the competition for the Golden Boot as Mzansi’s best goal scorer is heating up.

Bradley Grobler of SuperSport United will not be able to defend his Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot trophy after being declared out for the rest of the season.

But who will be named the country’s deadliest striker this season?

At one point, it seemed a given certainty that Peter Shalulile of Mamelodi Sundowns would win the prize — possibly in record-breaking form.

Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case right now, with the Namibian striker having scored 13 goals in 21 of Masandawana’s 30 appearances.

Instead, red-hot Victor Letsoalo (11 goals) with an extra match to play, has emerged as perhaps the favourite for the award.

Letsoalo found the back of the net from the penalty spot in Royal AM’s impressive 2-0 away win over SuperSport United on Sunday, while the last time Shalulile had his name on the scoresheet was 17 December 2021 against Orlando Pirates.

Collins Mbesuma holds the Golden Boot record with 25 goals

The last four seasons have all seen the Golden Boot won with 16 goals scored.

The record remains that of Kaizer Chiefs’ Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma in the 2004/05 season with 25 goals.
