In a political shake-up that’s raising both eyebrows and applause, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) is bringing in some youthful energy.
At just 24 years old, Liam Jacobs has been announced as the party’s new councillor in Johannesburg, stepping in temporarily for Kenny Kunene — a man currently surrounded by controversy.
This move, led by PA leader Gayton McKenzie, signals not only a temporary replacement but also the party’s confidence in the next generation.
It’s part fresh start, part damage control.
Why Kenny Kunene Was Placed on Leave
Kunene’s exit from the spotlight — at least for now — follows a wave of public scrutiny.
Earlier in July, he was reportedly found at the home of a suspect linked to the murder of well-known music personality Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka.
While Kunene insists he had no involvement in the crime and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, the PA isn’t taking any chances.
On July 22, the party officially placed him on a 30-day leave and temporarily stripped him of all his responsibilities, pending an internal investigation.
A Fresh Face Steps In
Enter Liam Jacobs. Just weeks into his membership with the Patriotic Alliance, he’s already making headlines.
Previously a leader within the Democratic Alliance’s student wing (DASO), Jacobs had served as its president since 2022 before switching political camps.
McKenzie made it clear that this isn’t just a seat-filler appointment.
“We want him to gain experience and keep the momentum going on service delivery — especially fixing potholes — which the deputy president [Kunene] had been working on,” McKenzie said.
From Politics to Wrestling — Meet Liam Jacobs
Jacobs isn’t your typical councillor. Beyond his political ambitions, he’s also a professional wrestler — talk about an unexpected twist.
His versatility and energy have earned him buzz as a potential mayoral candidate for Tshwane in 2026, despite his recent entry into the PA.
His appointment could be a strategic gamble or a genius move to energize the party with youthful vigor and a fresh perspective.
Should More Young Leaders Be Stepping Up?
This appointment opens up a wider question: is it time to give more young people a seat at the political table?
As the average age of many politicians continues to skew older, parties like the PA may be trying to tap into younger voters and show they’re serious about transformation and inclusion.
