When it comes to schoolboy rugby in South Africa, few rivalries stir up more emotion, pride, and tradition than the epic annual clash between Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gymnasium.

And this weekend, that rivalry reignites with a bang at Faure Street Stadium, where around 20,000 fans are expected to pack the stands — and thousands more will be watching from screens across the country.

A Packed Stadium and a Lot on the Line

The much-anticipated derby kicks off on Saturday and is already being called the biggest schools rugby fixture in South Africa this year.

More than just bragging rights are at stake — this game could decide who finishes the 2025 season as the top school rugby team in the country.

Both schools have had outstanding runs this season, setting the stage for a truly electric matchup.

Paarl Boys’ Comeback After Last Year’s Defeat

Last year was rough for Paarl Boys’. They were beaten 30–8 by their rivals in the 2024 derby.

But under the leadership of head coach Sean Erasmus, Boishaai have seriously turned things around.

They’ve won 15 of their 16 matches this season, including a huge victory against Grey College — a team no one beats easily.

It’s clear they’ve rebuilt with determination, and they’re heading into this derby with a point to prove.

Paarl Gym’s Unbeaten Streak and Firepower

But make no mistake — Paarl Gymnasium, known as the Gimmies, are in scary-good form.

Coached by former Springbok Pieter Rossouw, the team hasn’t lost a single match in 2025.

Out of 15 games, they’ve won 13 and drawn two.

They’ve become known for their ruthless attacking style, regularly putting up 40-plus points per game.

Their star player, Markus Muller, who also captains the SA Schools side, has been a key driver of their success — commanding the field from the centre position with confidence and flair.

It’s Defence vs Attack in a Classic Clash of Styles

Boishaai may not score as many flashy tries, but they’ve built a rock-solid defence this season.

In fact, they’ve only allowed opponents to score more than 20 points in three matches — an impressive stat that shows how well-drilled they are under pressure.

That defence will be put to the ultimate test this weekend as they go up against arguably the most dangerous attacking unit in South African school rugby.

Both Teams Have What It Takes to Win

There’s no clear favourite here. Gym are unbeaten, consistent, and attacking with flair.

Boishaai are motivated, battle-tested, and desperate to redeem themselves after last year’s derby loss.

Whichever way it goes, one thing is guaranteed — the Faure Street Stadium crowd is in for a thriller.
