Our new daily feature on the Orlando Pirates is dubbed Transfer Signing of the Day. Since the year 2000, we reflect on every successful Sea Robbers transfer.
Today’s highlighted transfer is one of the best defensive midfielders in club history. At the age of 23 in 2005, the lanky Nigerian Onyekachi Okonkwo arrived from Aba.
Okonkwo lasted two seasons until FC Zurich in Switzerland signed him. In 2012, he returned to the Buccaneers and wins the PSL championship, Telkom Knockout, and MTN8.
The exceptional qualities of Okonkwo were persistence, ball-winning, running, and aggressive tackling. Image: @KickOffMagazine/ Twitter.
Later, the Nigerian star went to Mpumalanga Black Aces before returning to Italy to play for a series of lower league clubs until his retirement in 2020.
