With the Orlando Pirates riding high after an impressive run in the CAF Champions League, their focus now shifts to domestic glory.
The team is preparing for a high-stakes Nedbank Cup showdown against Marumo Gallants this Sunday, and head coach Jose Riveiro believes their recent continental performance could be the boost they need.
Using Continental Success as Fuel
Coach Riveiro isn’t shy about how the team’s Champions League journey has impacted their mindset.
He sees it as more than just a string of matches—it’s been a deep test of character and quality.
“We looked at that tournament as a way to truly understand ourselves as a team,” Riveiro explained.
“Fourteen tough games, only four goals conceded—that says a lot about how competitive we’ve been at that level.”
And for him, that same level of sharpness and belief needs to carry into the Nedbank Cup, even if the arena is different.
Knockout Football Means No Room for Error
While league games can offer second chances, knockout matches don’t.
Sunday’s face-off with Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium is win or go home.
That’s exactly why Riveiro is emphasizing focus and urgency.
“This one is a different story—it’s a cup game,” he said. “In the league, you might get a draw or even recover from a loss later. But this time, it’s all or nothing.
Only two outcomes: you win and move on, or you’re out.”
Having already played Marumo Gallants twice in the league, Pirates are familiar with their opponents—but Riveiro knows that familiarity won’t guarantee anything in a knockout setting.
Preparing Mentally and Physically for the Big Stage
For the Pirates, the pressure is on, but this isn’t unfamiliar territory.
The squad has proven they can handle intense fixtures, and their coach believes they’re mentally equipped for what’s to come.
“We’ve got decent experience in these types of competitions,” Riveiro said.
“Now it’s all about recovering quickly, preparing right, and giving our best to reach another final.”
With the Nedbank Cup within reach, the Sea Robbers know what’s at stake—and they’re determined to keep their championship hopes alive.
