As Orlando Pirates continue building on a solid season, one club legend believes now is the time to reinforce the team if they want to remain competitive—especially on the continent.

Moeneeb Josephs, the former Buccaneers goalkeeper and captain, is calling for smart, strategic signings to push the club forward into the next campaign and beyond.

Moeneeb Josephs Identifies Two Key Players

Speaking on the Soccer Beat podcast, Josephs didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on who Pirates should pursue.

He singled out Stellenbosch FC’s Fawaaz Basadien and Polokwane City’s Oswin Appollis as ideal additions to the Bucs squad.

“If you’re serious about competing at the highest level, especially in the CAF Champions League, you need a deep and quality squad,” said Josephs. “Basadien has shown consistency all season.

He brings great energy, takes set pieces, and has that stamina to keep pushing down the flank. He’d be a smart signing.”

Appollis Could Fill a Crucial Role if Mofokeng Leaves

Josephs also pointed out that Appollis could become a vital player for the club, particularly if young star Relebohile Mofokeng secures a move overseas.

“With Appollis, you’re looking at someone who’s super active in attack,” he explained.

“He’s comfortable in multiple roles—whether it’s out wide, in the number 10 slot, or even as a false nine.

If Mofokeng moves to Europe, bringing in Appollis would add competition and energy in that creative area of the pitch.”

Josephs believes Appollis could challenge the likes of Kabelo Dlamini and Patrick Maswanganyi, pushing them to raise their game even more.

Building for the CAF Stage

The former Pirates shot-stopper emphasized that competing in continental competitions like the CAF Champions League demands not just talent, but also depth and consistency.

“We need players who can step in and maintain performance levels. That’s what separates a good season from a great one.”
