There’s a fresh buzz around the Orlando Pirates camp this season—and much of it is centered on a young forward from Mali who’s already turning heads.

Abdoulaye Mariko, just 22 years old, stepped onto the South African football scene with a lively debut that has fans eager to see more.

Mariko came off the bench during the Buccaneers’ 2-0 victory over Polokwane City in the MTN8 opener, delivering an energetic performance that sparked cheers and raised expectations.

From Mali’s Star Striker to Mayfair’s Newest Prospect

Before landing in South Africa, Mariko was lighting up the Malian Ligue 1 with Djoliba.

He didn’t just have a good season—he was the standout player, walking away with both the Golden Boot and Player of the Season honors.

Interestingly, another player with the exact same name also joined Pirates from Djoliba but will spend the upcoming season on loan at Chippa United.

Ouaddou Impressed but Focused on Integration

Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has high hopes for Mariko but knows that talent alone isn’t enough.

He spoke positively about the forward’s debut but emphasized that settling into the team—especially in a new country—comes with challenges.

“Mariko is a really promising player,” Ouaddou said. “He was the best in Mali last season, and we’ve seen glimpses of what he can do already.”

First Step Off the Field: Learn the Language

While the coach praised Mariko’s abilities, he was clear about one key priority—language.

“One of the first things I told him is that he has to learn English,” Ouaddou explained.

“That’s the first step if he wants to fully integrate into the squad, the culture, and the way we work here.”

He added, “He’s got talent, that’s obvious. But adapting off the pitch is just as important as performing on it.”

A Night of Firsts for the Buccaneers

Mariko wasn’t the only new face in Pirates’ starting mix.

He was one of six debutants who featured in the Polokwane clash, alongside Sipho Mbule, Sihle Nduli, Oswin Appollis, Yanela Mbuthuma, and Tshepang Moremi.

Together, they helped kick off the new season on a confident note.

A Good Start with a Long Road Ahead

Ouaddou remains optimistic about Mariko’s development.

He described him as “a top man with a good personality,” adding, “He knows what’s expected of him, and he’s the kind of player who can rise to the occasion.”

The potential is clearly there. Now it’s all about adaptation, consistency, and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead.

Will Mariko Become a Pirates Fan Favorite?

It’s early days, but the excitement around Mariko is real.

With the right support, language lessons, and continued form, the young Malian forward might just become the next big star in Mayfair.
