After more than two decades of touring the country, one of South Africa’s most prestigious golf events is going back to its original roots.
The Alfred Dunhill Championship is heading back to Johannesburg in December 2025 — and fans of the game couldn’t be more thrilled.
This move marks a nostalgic return to the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club, where the championship was first played between 2000 and 2004.
It’s a one-time shift that brings a classic feel back to the tournament — and for good reason.
Leopard Creek Needs a Breather
So why the sudden change in location? It turns out that Leopard Creek, the championship’s usual home, has taken a bit of a beating.
According to the Sunshine Tour, the course was heavily impacted by hosting both the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Championship and the high-profile R&A Africa Amateur Championship — all during the scorching South African summer.
That tight scheduling left the course under serious stress.
With turf and conditions needing recovery time, the organisers decided the best move was to give Leopard Creek a much-needed break.
Excitement Builds for Royal Johannesburg’s Big Moment
While it’s just a temporary switch, the decision to return to Royal Johannesburg’s East Championship Course is already generating buzz.
The course is no stranger to big events and is widely recognised as one of the top championship layouts not just in South Africa, but across the continent.
Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, expressed his enthusiasm:
“We’re delighted to be bringing the Alfred Dunhill Championship back to Johannesburg… Royal Johannesburg’s East Course is internationally renowned, and we’re excited to showcase it once again.”
Looking Ahead to December 2025
The 2025 edition of the Alfred Dunhill Championship is set for 11–14 December, promising four thrilling days of world-class golf.
Golf lovers in Johannesburg will get a rare chance to see the action live in their own backyard — and for many, it’ll feel like a homecoming.
