Mark Cavendish recently shared the terrifying experience of being held at knifepoint in front of his family during a burglary three years ago.
The violent attack left him emotionally scarred, especially as it took place in his own home with his young son witnessing the horrors unfold.
A Night of Terror
On the night of November 27, 2021, at around 2:30 AM, Cavendish, his wife Peta Todd, and their son were thrust into a nightmare when a masked gang stormed their house in Ongar, Essex.
Armed with large knives, the intruders were searching for a £2 million Richard Mille watch that Cavendish had borrowed for an awards event.
The assault was swift and brutal, with Cavendish being threatened at knifepoint while his child was in the room.
Describing the horrific moment, Cavendish recalled, “I get flashbacks all the time. To have a zombie knife held up to your throat in front of your kid, it was horrific.”
The Emotional Impact
Facing such extreme danger left Cavendish feeling helpless, especially with his wife and child in immediate danger.
He reflected on how the fear of not being able to protect them haunted him: “You think about what you could have done.
Everyone thinks, ‘I’d fight,’ but I tell you, anybody gets a knife held to their neck, you can’t do anything.”
Despite the terror, Cavendish found solace in the fact that he was present, stating, “I’m happier I was there than if it happened to Peta and the kids when I was away. I would never have forgiven myself.”
At the time, Peta was pregnant with the couple’s fifth child and had just been caring for Cavendish after he suffered broken ribs and a torn lung in a cycling accident.
She went downstairs to investigate a noise and was met by the intruders before rushing back upstairs to warn her husband.
The Violent Confrontation
Prosecutor Edward Renvoize provided details of the assault during the trial, explaining how the intruders attacked Cavendish, demanding he open the safe.
Unable to access it because the keypad batteries had died, Cavendish endured further violence.
Meanwhile, Peta took action to protect their son, hiding him under the covers to shield him from the frightening scene.
As one of the burglars brandished a “Rambo-style” knife, Peta attempted to call for help but had her phone ripped away from her.
The gang was looking for the expensive watch that Cavendish had borrowed and returned, which made the entire ordeal even more difficult for him.
Confronting Public Judgment
Following the robbery, Cavendish was shocked to face public criticism over his possession of the Richard Mille watch.
He clarified, “Being vilified for having expensive watches… I had borrowed it for something, the GQ awards or something.”
He emphasized his relationship with the watch brand, pointing out that they had supported him during challenging times.
“I’ve done everything myself. I’ve paid my taxes. Even if I had bought the watch myself, how can I be vilified for that?” he stated.
The emotional scars from that night still linger, but Cavendish’s candid conversation about the trauma he endured sheds light on the ongoing impact of the robbery.
