Nottingham Forest appoint former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou as new manager after Nuno Espírito Santo is sacked in England

Nottingham Forest are shaking things up in a big way.

Just hours after parting company with Nuno Espírito Santo, the club’s owner Evangelos Marinakis has turned to none other than Ange Postecoglou, the former Tottenham manager, to take charge.

The decision comes fast on the heels of Nuno’s sacking in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Marinakis is keen to have a replacement in place before Forest face Arsenal this weekend.

A Connection That Started Months Ago

Interestingly, the connection between Marinakis and Postecoglou isn’t brand new.

The pair first crossed paths in July when the Greek Super League honoured Postecoglou for his achievements with Tottenham.

Marinakis, clearly impressed by him, praised Postecoglou’s pride in his Greek roots and his ability to bring success to Spurs by winning the Europa League – a long-awaited trophy for the club.

“He doesn’t hide his heritage, he celebrates it,” Marinakis said at the ceremony.

“What he did for Tottenham after years of difficulty gave Greece international recognition.”

Postecoglou’s Emotional Reflection

When Postecoglou received his award, his speech struck a personal chord.

He recalled leaving Greece as a child and how his late father instilled in him a deep love for football.

Though his playing career never took off, he said his coaching journey has always been about making his father proud.

“My father is not with me anymore, but I believe he sees what I have built. I carry his sacrifices with me every day,” he said.

With his wife by his side, Postecoglou also expressed gratitude to both Greece and Australia, calling it “an honour” to be recognised.

Why Spurs Let Him Go

Despite delivering Tottenham’s first piece of silverware since 2008, Postecoglou’s time in north London ended on a sour note.

Spurs’ disappointing 17th-place finish in the Premier League was simply too much for the club’s hierarchy to overlook, leading to his dismissal.

Still, the 60-year-old had made it clear that he wanted to remain in English football, making Forest’s offer an ideal opportunity.

Nuno’s Short-Lived Forest Story

Nuno may have led Forest into Europe for the first time in decades, but behind the scenes, things weren’t running smoothly.

His relationship with the club’s leadership soured over the summer, particularly after disagreements about transfers.

Tensions grew further when former Arsenal midfielder Edu was brought in as global head of football.

Nuno, who arrived at Forest in December 2023, openly admitted his rapport with Marinakis had declined, even as the owner publicly dismissed talk of a rift.

Eventually, the split became official in a late-night club statement, which thanked Nuno for guiding Forest through a historic 2024/25 campaign.

“He will always hold a special place in our journey,” the statement read.

What’s Next for Forest?

All eyes are now on Postecoglou as he prepares to take over a team navigating both newfound European commitments and a tough Premier League campaign.

Forest fans will be eager to see whether his attacking philosophy and calm presence can steady the ship after a turbulent summer.

For Marinakis, this appointment feels like a gamble rooted in both admiration and belief.

For Postecoglou, it’s another chance to prove himself on English soil – and perhaps, to finally write a success story at the City Ground.
