Nomzamo Mbatha has done an emotional walk-through in the rubble of what is left of her mother’s Durban home following the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) floods – and the destruction is devastating!

The actress returned to her KwaMashu family abode this week, sharing the experience with her Instagram followers.

Pictured amongst the debris of broken homes, Nomzamo revealed that KZN floods had wreaked havoc on her childhood neighborhood.

She wrote: “It is the most vulnerable and most marginalised that pay the highest price. A road that I use when driving to my mother’s house… that is also a bridge and ‘had’ homes on either side… what I am standing on is the debris of what was once those homes.

But the worst was the sickening thought that more dead bodies lay undiscovered amongst the rubble.

She added: “One of my team members comes over my shoulder and puts a phone in my face and says ‘these are the missing two from that home’. The tears cannot hold themselves”.

And to make matters worst, families in the neighborhood have been without clean water for several weeks due to damage to infrastructure

Nomzamo continued: “You ask what is needed … ‘Boots’, so we can go through the rubble and look for the lost bodies. ‘Mattresses and blankets’ because of all the displaced sleep in the community halls and others in a neighbouring home. ‘Body cosmetics… water’ … we have been without water for 22 days now and local swimming pools have asked that people come to get with buckets…”

Nomzamo also reflected on the anguish of what was probably experienced during the KZN floods.

She added: “I keep thinking of the helplessness of people realising what was happening and having no chance to even run. Families wiped out”.

R500K DONATION FOR FAMILIES OF KZN FLOODS

Taking to Instagram on Friday 29 April, Nomzamo revealed that she alongside the Cotton On Foundation would be donating R500 000 towards the families affected by the KZN floods.

She shared: “The fundraising campaign will begin today across all Cotton On stores. For the next two weeks, 100% of proceeds from Cotton On Foundation product sales and donations online and in-store will be channeled to this cause.

“By purchasing water cans, tote bags, masks and other items marked “Cotton On Foundation”, you will be making a difference! This support will provide approximately 200 families affected, including children with disabilities, with home rebuilding structures, much-needed food vouches , emergency water, and hygiene supplies.

“Additionally, psychosocial support and counselling services will help to improve the emotional wellbeing of children in the community”.
