The New Nigeria’s People’s Party, NNPP, is urging President Muhammadu Buhari to assent the Electoral Amendment Bill for the benefit of democracy.
The National Secretary of NNPP, rtd Major Gilbert Agbo stated this in an interview with Voice of Nigeria’s Correspondent in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Major Agbo said that NNPP’s main Agenda ahead of the 2023 general election is to focus on government at grass root level to ensure direct democratic participation in the country.
“For us as a party we are focused on government at the grass root level.
We are determined to provide leadership at the lower level from Local Government to State Assembly to provide leadership to our people.
”
On the Electoral Amendment Bill, the
National Secretary said “The Bill which is before the President for assent is a product of a series of consultations, we held series of conferences, workshops, talk shows to present to the National Assembly our views on some of the issues for amicable resolution.
“Some members of the National Assembly were not comfortable with the Bill but some went with the views of Nigerians on basic things that enhance our electoral process, that is exactly what has been transmitted.
I understand the President is studying the Bill on some parts of Legislature, Nigerians need an electoral system that will give results” he added.
On the issue of Direct Primaries election Major Agbo explained;
“Direct Primaries makes the process of selecting candidates more participatory for every member of the political Party every member of a political party will come out to indicate the candidate that he or she would want to fly the party’s flag at the various level is no longer a delegate election to elect candidates.
“The implication of indirect primaries is that the younger parties that haven’t formed government and have no resources will now begin to run around to fund logistics for the elections.
”
On what can be done to strengthen Nigeria’s Democracy.
“The legislation that guides our electoral process, the laws guiding the conduct of election and all of the government policies have to be strengthened, this issue of electronic transfer of result, electronic voting have to adopted so that the chances of manipulating election, either at the point of voting or at the various coalition centers will be reduced,” he stressed
The Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021, especially clause 52(3) which indicated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may transmit elections results by electronic means where and when practicable at its discretion.
