Nigerian Army Intensifies Clearance Operations to Combat Banditry and Kidnapping Across Kwara and Niger States

Communities in parts of Kwara and Niger States have recently witnessed a noticeable increase in military presence, as the Nigerian Army ramps up operations aimed at curbing banditry, kidnapping, and other security challenges in the North Central region.

This comes amid ongoing efforts to ensure peace and stability for residents in affected areas.

Brigadier General Nicholas Rume, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, shared these updates on Saturday during the 2025 Nigerian Army Social Activities held at Sobi Cantonment in Ilorin.

Sustained Military Operations in Vulnerable Areas

General Rume highlighted that the brigade has been actively conducting a series of operations targeting criminal networks in border communities and forested regions.

Key missions include Operation Fansan Yamma and Operation Harmony in Kwara State, along with Operation Park Strike IV and V, which recently concluded.

These operations spanned Kainji Lake National Park, nearby villages in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, and Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas in Kwara State.

“The 22 Armoured Brigade carried out several clearance operations in 2025, including Park Strike IV and V, covering Kainji Lake National Park and surrounding villages, as well as areas in Borgu LGA of Niger State and Kaiama and Baruten LGAs in Kwara State,” Rume stated.

He further emphasized that Operation Fansan Yamma is still ongoing, with the goal of flushing out bandits and restoring calm in affected communities.

Forward Bases Strengthen Security Presence

To improve response times and maintain consistent security coverage, the Nigerian Army has established Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Patigi and Ilemona, and patrol bases in Babasango, Gada, and Daban Lema.

These facilities enhance the brigade’s operational reach across Kwara and neighboring states.

“These bases support our operations and strengthen our ability to respond to security threats effectively,” Rume said.

The commander also explained that the intensified military presence is in response to increasing incidents of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery, which continue to threaten communities in the North Central region.

Commitment to Collaboration and Peace

Rume reassured residents of the Army’s dedication to working alongside other security agencies to ensure lasting peace.

“I assure everyone of 22 Armoured Brigade’s readiness to collaborate with all security agencies to maintain peace and security in our area of responsibility,” he said.

State Government Praises Military Efforts

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also lauded the Nigerian Army, especially the 22 Armoured Brigade, for its decisive role in tackling insecurity in the state.

Represented at the event by Brigadier General Saliu Tunde Bello (Retired), the governor highlighted the importance of collaboration between the military and state authorities in safeguarding lives and livelihoods.

“I commend the relentless efforts of the 22 Armoured Brigade and the Nigerian Army in addressing security challenges.

Your courage and commitment in restoring peace are making a tangible difference in our communities,” AbdulRazaq said.

He reaffirmed his government’s support for the military, promising continued cooperation and provision of logistics to strengthen ongoing operations.

The governor also expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W. Shaibu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support and leadership of the Armed Forces.

Army Social Activities Foster Unity and Culture

The annual Nigerian Army Social Activities serve multiple purposes: they boost morale, provide a platform to review operational performance, and celebrate Nigeria’s cultural diversity.

Officers, soldiers, and their families come together to reflect on achievements while strengthening bonds within the military community.
