Nigeria has tasked the International Labour Organisation ILO to develop a better poverty reduction mechanism for the benefit of the world.
Minister of Labour and employment Dr Chris Ngige made the call when he received the French Candidate for the position of the ILO Director General, Muriel Penicaud who visited him in Abuja to seek Nigeria’s support for her bid.
He also called on all the candidates to have formidable social security system and create decent jobs for the youths of the world.
The Labour and employment Minister Senator Chris Ngige who identified Muriel Penicaud as seasoned and experience candidate in handling labour affairs challenged her and her counterparts to assist low income earners in the world through good programmes and policies.
“Low income leads to poverty, so ILO has to join in fighting poverty.
”
Senator Ngige stressed the need for the International Labour Organization to mobilize donor partners and other global agencies to address unemployment globally, build hospitals and schools adding that doing so will help in nipping insecurity and illegal migration.
“We need ILO to assist mobilize donor partners and other global agencies so that we can move into this because, if you allow poverty to push somebody into marauder, bandit or robber, we are in danger.
” Ngige stressed.
He informed the visiting French ILO candidate of the efforts of Nigerian government in addressing job loss as a result of the COVID-19 PANDEMIC
The visiting French ILO candidate Mrs Muriel Penicaud told the Labour Minister of her mission for the Director General ILO anchored on social agenda and peace for world.
She identified the need to find a new alliance of working together for social justice.
Mrs Muriel described Nigeria as a huge asset to Africa and a friend to France.
Mrs Muriel Penicaud was in company of the French Ambassador to Nigeria Emmanuelle Blatmann, leaders from Nigerian Labour Congress NLC and Trade Union Congress.
