Labour Unions Unite for a Nationwide Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly decided to initiate a nationwide strike commencing on October 3, 2023.

This significant move comes as a result of the Federal Government’s failure to effectively implement policies aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by the Nigerian populace.

Demands Stemming from Subsidy Removal

The organized labour unions had presented a set of demands to the Federal Government, primarily in response to the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

These demands encompass a range of issues, including wage awards, the implementation of palliative measures, tax exemptions, and allowances for public sector workers, along with a thorough review of the minimum wage.

Collaborative Efforts in the Face of Inaction

During a virtual National Executive Council meeting held on Zoom, the National President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, disclosed that discussions had been held with TUC officials to chart a way forward.

The decision to unite their efforts and communicate a resolute stance to the government was reached during this meeting.
