Nicky Henderson Steals the Show at Newbury with Joyeuse’s Thrilling Victory in the £100,000 William Hill Handicap Hurdle

Despite a setback that prevented Nicky Henderson’s headline horse from racing, the trainer still made waves on Super Saturday thanks to the exceptional performance of Joyeuse.

Originally, the spotlight was supposed to shine on Henderson’s rising star, Sir Gino, who was set to compete in the Game Spirit Chase.

However, a minor injury forced Sir Gino out of the race, leaving 11-1 shot Master Chewy to claim the Grade Two title for Nigel Twiston-Davies.

Although Henderson couldn’t showcase Sir Gino, he still walked away with a victory when Joyeuse obliterated the competition in the £100,000 William Hill Handicap Hurdle.

The race, which typically sees horses on the rise, was the perfect stage for the 9-2 shot mare to prove her potential.

Joyeuse surged forward with such intensity that jockey Nico de Boinville struggled to keep her steady.

Once she reached the front at the final hurdle, victory was never in doubt.

Joyeuse’s Potential Beyond Handicaps at Cheltenham

Joyeuse’s commanding win has led to whispers of her being a strong contender for a handicap race at the Cheltenham Festival.

However, she would not qualify, having only raced four times.

Henderson, who celebrated his seventh win in this race, believes she is destined for bigger things, explaining, “She will not be going for a Cheltenham handicap, you wouldn’t run her again to qualify.”

Henderson Reflects on Sir Gino’s Recovery and Future Plans

While Joyeuse took the spotlight, Henderson also shared an update on Sir Gino, assuring fans that he is recovering well from his injury. “He is sound, thankfully,” Henderson remarked.

“I would be mortified if you didn’t see him again before Cheltenham.”

The trainer is eyeing either Kempton or Bangor-on-Dee for Sir Gino’s return, with hopes of having him fit for the prestigious event.
