An NHS nurse in charge of a women’s psychiatric unit has been banned after making racist comments towards colleagues.
Jaden Rachel Dios Hole, who worked as a ward manager at a mental health trauma unit in Chichester, used offensive language including racial slurs, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Inappropriate Comments Across Multiple Incidents
Hole’s racist remarks spanned several years, from 2017 to 2020, and included calling a black colleague the N-word, making derogatory remarks about a colleague’s sick note, and asking another if they were “from the plantation.”
These incidents were brought to light during a disciplinary hearing at the NMC.
A Disturbing Incident on a Team-Building Trip
One of the most troubling events occurred when Hole, reportedly intoxicated, called a black colleague “my n*****” on their way home from a team-building event.
Hole defended the remark, claiming it was a reference to a Snoop Dogg song playing in the car, though two staff members who were present during the journey said they did not recall the song being played.
The NMC panel concluded that the comment was racially abusive.
More Offensive Remarks from the Nurse
On another occasion, Hole made a crude comment about a black staff member who was off sick, asking colleagues, “I wonder which witch doctor she was going to get that sick note from.”
Additionally, Hole allegedly asked a colleague, “Who are you? The man from the plantation?”
The Nurse’s Career and Response
Hole, who had worked in psychiatric healthcare for 30 years, had been employed at the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust since 2014.
Following reports of the racist behavior, Hole was suspended in May 2021, and a total of seven charges were either admitted or proven during the NMC hearing.
Hole’s legal team argued that the nurse had shown remorse for their actions and admitted their conduct fell below the expected standard.
Trust’s Immediate Response
The Sussex Partnership NHS Trust responded promptly to the allegations, launching an investigation into the racist behavior.
A spokesperson for the trust emphasized their commitment to providing inclusive and anti-racist healthcare services, making it clear that such behavior would not be tolerated.
