As part of efforts to further develop the youth populace and provide an enabling environment for them to thrive and unleash their potentials, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, commissioned the remodeled Abesan Youth Centre in Alimosho Local Government Area.
Addressing residents during the commissioning, the Governor stated that the completion and commissioning of the project was in fulfillment of his electoral promises to give the youth population a sense of belonging and to better their lot.
Sanwo-Olu promised that he would ensure the sustenance of the good legacies left by the first civilian Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande by giving a voice to the youth.
He assured that the present administration will give youths across the State their rightful place in the scheme of things by widening the space for them to maximise their potentials, through adequate budgetary allocation and implementation of programmes that would positively impact their lives.
The Governor listed the programmes to include vocational training of youths on different trades with a start-up grant to establish their own businesses, as well as the provision of adequate attention through proper counseling and other intervention initiatives for those with mental and psychological challenges to engender enhanced productivity.
On his part, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Segun Dawodu, disclosed that one of the focal points of the Lagos State Government was youth-centered programmes because “Lagos State has a youth population estimated to be 10 million out of the 23 million people in the State.
He stated that mapping a strategy to enhance, develop and create opportunities, as well as effective utilisation of the significant youth population is a priority for the State, adding that the construction of Youth Centres across the State was initiated to give more young people the opportunity to build their physical and mental health, personal and cognitive capacity, enhance creativity, citizenship and civic competencies.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Mr. Lekan Biliaminu Oba commended the State Government for the gigantic youth centre, describing it as a demonstration of the love and unwavering commitment to the youths that he regards as the leaders of tomorrow.
The newly remodeled Abesan Youth Centre, located in a serene, safe and conducive environment, has ample parking spaces, gymnasium, multipurpose hall, kitchen, counseling room, office space, computer room, vocational training rooms and children’s play area.
Some of the dignitaries present at the event include the State Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Commissioners, Party Chieftains, Religious and Traditional Rulers, and other top government functionaries among others.
