Newport, Rhode Island, is once again in the spotlight after shocking reports of bullying at Rogers High School have come to light.
The case has escalated as authorities announce two additional arrests in connection with a disturbing assault caught on video.
Additional Arrests Shake the Community
Following earlier assault charges against two 16-year-old football team members, police have now charged a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old with assaulting the same young victim.
Newport Police confirmed that their investigation is ongoing, with the latest arrests made on Monday.
The victim, described by authorities as having “severe impairments,” remains at the center of a case that has gripped both the school and the wider community.
The names of those involved have not been released, as all suspects are minors.
Viral Video Sparks Outrage
The incident gained national attention after a video reportedly captured the attack.
According to Newport Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, the footage shows other students failing to intervene or alert an adult.
“This is a serious matter and there is no grey area when it comes to behavior like this,” Jermain emphasized.
She also reassured families that all individuals involved will face disciplinary measures in line with district policies.
Superintendent Jermain added that student-athletes, in particular, have a responsibility as leaders and role models.
“Our athletes need to understand that this behavior will never be tolerated at Newport Public Schools,” she said.
Graphic Footage Highlights Severity
Published on Instagram by Newport Buzz, the video shows a seated student being struck with what appears to be a strap or belt by a football player.
In one harrowing clip, the victim kneels and apologizes before being hit again with a rubber stretching band.
Authorities report that the attack occurred on Thursday in Newport, an affluent Rhode Island enclave, with one suspect scheduled for arraignment the following Friday.
The Newport Police Department reaffirmed that bullying will not be tolerated or condoned, promising a thorough investigation.
Community Rallies to Support Victim
In the wake of the incident, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist with the victim’s legal expenses.
The post, believed to be written by a family member, read: “That was my little brother who is special needs in the video.
We need a lawyer, so whatever you can donate, please do. Thank you.”
Football Program Under Scrutiny
The assault has also drawn attention to Rogers High School’s football program.
The team, coming off a 28-6 win over Providence’s Juanita Sanchez Complex, has had a challenging season, finishing with a 2-8 record and ranking 34th in Rhode Island, according to MaxPreps.com.
Founded in 1890, the football program has a long history but has produced just one NFL player, former Chicago Bears lineman John Mellekas.
The recent events have left the community questioning how such behavior could occur within a program meant to foster teamwork and leadership.
What’s Next for Newport?
As investigations continue, parents, school officials, and the community are left seeking answers and solutions.
The case has raised serious questions about student safety, bullying, and the responsibilities of young athletes.
Meanwhile, the focus remains on supporting the victim and ensuring such incidents are never repeated.
