Luke Deeley, a 26-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia, was caught on video after murdering 65-year-old June Fox-Roberts.

The attack took place in her home in Llantwit Fardre, near Pontypridd, and Deeley beat the mother-of-three to death before dismembering her with an axe and placing her limbs in bags.

Hours after the attack, Deeley was seen on video sitting on the floor singing to himself.

Deeley was arrested on 23 June 2021, two days after the attack, and claimed he believed a group of people were out to get him.

He said a “higher power” had told him he needed to kill someone.

Three psychiatric reports agreed that he was suffering from an “abnormality of mind” at the time of the killing, namely paranoid schizophrenia.

Deeley pleaded guilty to manslaughter in diminished responsibility and was sentenced to detention in a high-security hospital under a hospital order subject to section 37 of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Judge orders Deeley to be detained indefinitely

During his sentencing, Mr Justice Griffiths noted that Deeley posed a high risk of committing further serious offences and that detention was necessary to protect the public from serious harm.

Deeley’s case was also subject to special restrictions under section 41 to remove the limit of time.

The judge stated that it was not possible to say how long Deeley would be detained.
