When you’re handed the reins of one of Africa’s biggest football clubs, you don’t get time to ease in—you dive straight into the deep end.

That’s exactly where Abdeslam Ouaddou finds himself after being appointed as the new head coach of Orlando Pirates.

And he’s not running from the pressure—in fact, he’s embracing it.

Following in Riveiro’s Footsteps

The 46-year-old Moroccan coach steps into some pretty big shoes.

His predecessor, Jose Riveiro, made quite the mark in Soweto, guiding the Buccaneers to three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup trophies in just three seasons.

That legacy sets a high bar, and Ouaddou knows he’s expected to keep that momentum going.

Pressure? Bring It On

Speaking to the media ahead of his debut in the MTN8 against Polokwane City, Ouaddou didn’t try to downplay the weight on his shoulders.

“It’s positive pressure,” he said. “When you join a club of this magnitude—one of the biggest in South Africa and the continent—you don’t come here to relax.

I understand the expectations of the board and the fans.”

He added that he’s determined to hit the ground running: “I’ll give everything to reach the targets.

The players have done well over the past few seasons, so let’s keep pushing forward. We’ve got a big challenge ahead.”

First League Test: Sekhukhune United at Home

The real test begins with the upcoming Betway Premiership opener, where the Buccaneers will host Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium.

That match kicks off at 17:30 and will give fans their first real look at what Ouaddou brings to the table.

Fans Watching Closely

With so much change happening, Orlando Pirates supporters are naturally eager—and anxious—to see how the team evolves under Ouaddou.

Will he continue Riveiro’s trophy-winning formula? Or will he introduce a fresh new style of play?
