Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix, has finally addressed the future of Meghan Markle’s partnership with the streaming giant following the lukewarm reception to her lifestyle series With Love, Meghan.
Released earlier this month, the eight-part series received scathing reviews from critics and failed to draw in the same audience numbers as Markle’s previous Netflix project, Harry & Meghan.
Disappointing Reception and Ratings
Despite its release under high expectations, With Love, Meghan underperformed both critically and in viewership.
In its first five days on Netflix, the series was watched by just 526,000 households, a far cry from the 2.1 million households that tuned in for Harry & Meghan within a similar timeframe.
However, despite the mixed reviews, Netflix has confirmed that the series will be renewed for a second season, with the company standing by Markle amid the backlash.
Sarandos Defends Meghan Markle’s Influence on Culture
In an interview with Variety, Sarandos defended Markle, claiming that the Duchess of Sussex has been “underestimated” by many in terms of her influence.
Sarandos pointed out that even in the wake of critical reviews, Markle’s impact on culture is undeniable.
He recalled how, after the release of the trailer for Harry & Meghan in 2022, items featured in the documentary, like the shoes she wore and an Hermès blanket, sold out worldwide.
“People are fascinated with Meghan Markle,” Sarandos stated, emphasizing how both she and Harry are often “overly dismissed.”
Netflix’s Stake in Markle’s Business As Ever
Sarandos also revealed that Netflix has a passive stake in Markle’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, which markets various products featured in the show, from jams to edible flowers.
Sarandos explained that Netflix views this partnership as an exciting discovery model, noting that they were especially interested in the potential reach of the brand.
In an effort to capitalize on this, Netflix has announced plans to feature As Ever products in two of its newly opened stores in major U.S. retail locations: the King of Prussia Mall in Philadelphia and the Dallas Galleria.
Concerns About Negative Reviews and Product Rollout
Despite the second season renewal, a Netflix insider revealed that the company’s leadership has been “worried” about the negative reviews the series received.
The source explained that although a second season is set to be released soon, it doesn’t necessarily mean Markle’s overall Netflix contract has been renewed.
It was noted that both seasons were filmed back-to-back, allowing for adjustments to be made based on feedback from viewers and critics.
The insider also pointed out that Netflix bosses are particularly concerned about the future of As Ever, which will soon launch in physical stores.
With a significant investment in both the brand and the product line, they are uncertain about how to roll it out effectively.
The source added that major industry outlets like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have been less than enthusiastic about Markle’s endeavors, adding pressure to the already fragile partnership.
A Surprising Turn of Events for the Duchess of Sussex
Despite the hurdles, Markle remains confident, and she confirmed the second season of With Love, Meghan via Instagram, expressing her excitement for the upcoming release.
While the mixed reception has raised concerns among Netflix executives, the streaming service appears to be committed to giving the Duchess another shot with the series and supporting her in her venture with As Ever.
