Every year, golf enthusiasts and supporters of South Africa’s vulnerable communities come together for a special day that combines sport, friendship, and philanthropy.

The next Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day is set for Friday, 5 September 2025, at the picturesque Foxhills Club and Resort in Surrey, England.

From Friendly Games to a Powerful Charity Movement

What began back in 1994 as a casual day out for South African golfers quickly evolved into something much bigger.

The event originally started as a fun day of golf followed by the usual lively South African banter over drinks and dinner.

But everything changed in 1997 when Geoff Johnson, the man behind the day, invited two legends of South African sport—rugby captain Francois Pienaar and cricket captain Clive Rice—to join in.

Pienaar suggested that future events should raise funds to support rugby and cricket development in South African townships.

Rice agreed, and by 1998 the South Africans In Need Trust (S.A.I.N.T.) was officially formed in the UK.

Growing Influence and Prestigious Support

The golf day really gained momentum in 2001 when former South African President FW de Klerk, who shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela, agreed to attend.

That year, 428 golfers turned up, including business leaders like Raymond Ackerman and top South African sports stars based in Britain.

Since then, the Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day has grown to become the largest golf day in Europe—and possibly the world—bringing together players united by a shared cause.

Supporting Vulnerable Communities in South Africa

While the golf is a highlight, the heart of the event remains its mission to raise funds for children and communities in need across South Africa. The event supports three key charities:

  • Africa Humane Nyosi Project in the Eastern Cape, focusing on conservation and community support

  • FW de Klerk Foundation, backing four charities aiding people with disabilities

  • Masicorp, which supports schools in Masiphumelele near Cape Town

Together, these organizations benefit from nearly £4 million raised since the event’s inception.

Changing Venues, But Keeping the Spirit Alive

The Charity Golf Day has traveled a bit over the years, beginning at Mentmore Country Club and moving through Moor Park, Stoke Park, Foxhills, Burhill Golf Club, and Essendon Country Club.

This year, it returns to Foxhills Club and Resort, near Woking in Surrey.

Organisers expect a full turnout of 130 golfers, with 180 guests attending the gala dinner the evening before.

What to Expect on the Day

Registration opens at 9:30 AM, followed by a golfers briefing at 11:15 AM.

The game kicks off promptly at noon with a shotgun start.

Entry costs £1,600 per fourball, making it a great way to enjoy a round of golf for a great cause.

For those interested in joining the golf or attending the gala dinner, organisers encourage early booking.
