National Intervention Unit shoots and kills wanted suspect linked to school principal murder in Msinga KwaZulu-Natal

The murder of school principal Zwelabantu Zuma in KwaZulu-Natal continues to echo years after the crime. This week, the National Intervention Unit (NIU) tracked down and killed yet another suspect linked to the case, marking a new chapter in a story that has already seen several accused jailed, and others killed before standing trial.

A Principal’s Murder That Shocked Msinga

Zwelabantu Zuma was shot and killed inside his school office in Msinga back in 2020—a crime that rocked the local community.

Since then, police have been pursuing multiple suspects tied not just to his killing but also to a web of other serious crimes in KwaZulu-Natal.

NIU Moves In on the Suspect

On Sunday, 7 September, the NIU closed in on one of the wanted men at a hostel in Mapetla, Soweto.

According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the 40-year-old suspect had a long criminal record and was already wanted for crimes such as carjacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

When police approached, the suspect allegedly opened fire.

The NIU shot back, fatally wounding him on the spot.

A History of Escapes and Arrests

This wasn’t the first time police had the man in custody.

He had previously been arrested, but the case was withdrawn in court. However, SAPS investigators didn’t stop there.

After presenting new evidence, they secured a J50 warrant of arrest, which eventually led to Sunday’s confrontation.

Others Already Sentenced

The case has seen multiple twists over the years.

Two of the accused are currently serving life sentences, while two others died before their trials could conclude.

With this latest shooting, there remains just one suspect still at large.

Police Still on the Hunt

Brigadier Mathe confirmed that the investigation is not over.

“One suspect is still outstanding in this case and police are still searching for the remaining suspect,” she explained.

The search continues as authorities aim to close the final chapter in this high-profile case.

The Bigger Picture

The death of yet another suspect raises tough questions about how often police encounters with wanted criminals end fatally.

For some, it’s proof of the dangers officers face in the line of duty.

For others, it highlights concerns about suspects dying before they can face justice in court.
