This weekend’s travelers to Kwa-Zulu Natal are advised to carefully plan their routes to avoid traffic on the N3 between Hilton and Cato Ridge, which is congested due to construction on the road.

Travelers are advised that this stretch of road has recently seen an increase in fatal collisions, especially around Peter Brown outside of Pietermaritzburg, most of which occur at night or in the early hours of the morning.

Mist frequently reduces visibility along sections of this road, so drivers should plan their routes accordingly. This has caused traffic congestion and hours of delays for drivers as emergency personnel treat crash victims before attempting to restore traffic flow.

Therefore, it is advised that drivers think about taking daytime routes when visibility is good.

Since Friday, there will be more law enforcement officers on the road to reduce the likelihood of accidents and address traffic law violations.

To reduce the number of fatal crashes on the road, increased police visibility will pay special attention to speeding, drunk driving, and fatigue.

Over the course of the weekend, the city of eThekwini, where an estimated 35 000 people are expected to attend the July Handicap, will also maintain a high level of enforcement by the traffic police.

Additionally, there will be promotions for road safety to remind drivers of proper behavior on the road.
