On April 17, 2025, Moscow issued a stern warning to Berlin regarding the potential deployment of German-made Taurus missiles in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova made it clear that if Germany were to use these long-range missiles against Russian targets, it would be viewed as Germany’s direct involvement in the war, siding with Ukraine.

Russia’s Strong Warning

Zakharova emphasized that the use of the Taurus missiles would signify a direct participation of Germany in combat operations on the side of the Ukrainian government.

She further noted that such action would not be possible without the involvement of German military personnel, particularly those from the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces.

According to Zakharova, this would trigger significant consequences for Germany, escalating the conflict in ways that Berlin may not anticipate.

The Taurus Missile: A Powerful Weapon

The Taurus missile, developed by Taurus Systems GmbH—a German-Swedish joint venture— is a long-range, air-to-surface cruise missile designed for precision strikes on high-value and fortified targets.

With a range of around 500 kilometers (about 310 miles), it can strike deep within enemy territory, far from the launch site, providing a substantial advantage to the user.

Its advanced technology includes stealth capabilities, terrain-following features, and a tandem warhead designed to penetrate hardened targets such as underground bunkers.

Germany’s Hesitation to Supply Taurus Missiles to Ukraine

Despite multiple requests from Ukraine, Germany has so far refrained from sending Taurus missiles to the conflict.

The reluctance stems from concerns about escalating the war and potentially drawing Germany into direct conflict with Russia.

The German government, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could lead to direct confrontation with Russia.

However, domestic political pressures and calls from Ukraine for more advanced weaponry are pushing the debate forward within Germany.

The Debate Within Germany

The dilemma facing Germany is whether to provide these powerful weapons to Ukraine, despite the risks of further escalating tensions with Russia.

The potential involvement of German military personnel in operating the Taurus system is another major factor that complicates the decision.

Although Germany has been cautious in its support for Ukraine, increasing pressure from allies and domestic advocates for stronger support could influence a shift in policy.

A Look at the Taurus Missile’s Capabilities

The Taurus missile is equipped with a multi-effect penetrator warhead (MEPHISTO), designed to clear soil or penetrate deeply buried and fortified targets like bunkers.

Weighing around 1,400 kg (3,100 lbs), the missile can reach speeds of Mach 0.95 and is capable of being launched from various military aircraft, including the Eurofighter Typhoon and McDonnell Douglas F-15K Slam Eagle.

Its precise targeting system and ability to attack critical infrastructure, such as command centers, airfields, and even ships at sea, make it a formidable weapon.

Germany’s Reluctance and the Path Ahead

As of now, the German government remains cautious, with officials prioritizing the avoidance of direct military involvement in the conflict.

However, the debate continues, and with increasing pressure from both domestic and international forces, Germany’s stance could evolve in the coming months.
