Monnapule Saleng, the talented winger for Orlando Pirates, has been noticeably absent from the field since early December, leaving many fans and observers wondering why.
After an impressive start to the season, where he netted several crucial goals for the team, his sudden disappearance has fueled a lot of speculation.
Alleged Move to the Middle East Denied
Earlier this year, reports emerged suggesting that Saleng was set to make a move to the Middle East, with some sources claiming Orlando Pirates turned down the offer.
However, the club swiftly denied those claims, saying there was no truth to the story.
This left many scratching their heads, wondering what was really happening behind the scenes.
A Possible Deal with Al Ahly
This week, SoccerBeat’s Peter Du Toit shed more light on the situation, revealing that Saleng was actually close to joining Al Ahly, one of the biggest football clubs in Africa.
Du Toit emphasized that Al Ahly is widely regarded as the largest club on the continent, a status that even overshadows other giants like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns, due to their trophy-laden history.
What Went Wrong with the Al Ahly Move?
Du Toit went on to explain that Saleng had been satisfied with the terms of the offer and was ready to make the move to Egypt.
In fact, he revealed that Pirates had even gone so far as to arrange a visa for Saleng, indicating that the deal was nearly finalized.
So, what went wrong?
According to Du Toit, the issue wasn’t with negotiations between Saleng’s camp and the clubs involved, nor was it a problem between Pirates and Al Ahly.
The real hitch, he explained, was a third-party issue involving Percy Tau.
Percy Tau’s Role in the Deal Falling Through
Apparently, without informing Pirates or Saleng, Al Ahly was in the process of selling Percy Tau, with Saleng lined up as his replacement.
However, when the deal to sell Tau fell through, Al Ahly decided to step back from their pursuit of Saleng.
As a result, the move never came to fruition, and Saleng stayed at Pirates.
What Does the Future Hold for Saleng?
Although Saleng remains at Orlando Pirates for now, his future is uncertain.
The 26-year-old winger could still leave at the end of the season, but there’s a risk that Pirates might lose him for free if no agreement is reached before then.
