Monitor lizard drags and devours newborn baby in grassy field near Bangkok as horrified locals call for answers

What started as an ordinary day in Samut Prakan, just outside Bangkok, turned into a nightmarish scene that has left locals horrified.

A massive monitor lizard, measuring around seven feet long, was spotted dragging something through tall grass in a vacant lot.

At first glance, a resident thought the creature had caught a fish—but the truth was far more disturbing.

Monitor Lizard Found Eating Human Remains

Emergency responders and wildlife officials rushed to the area after receiving the shocking call.

When they arrived, they discovered the lizard chewing on what turned out to be the lower half of a newborn baby’s body.

The reptile quickly fled beneath a nearby concrete fence when rescuers attempted to capture it.

Horrific footage later surfaced showing the animal hiding in a swampy patch under a house, still gnawing on the dismembered remains.

Officers were able to recover the baby’s head and torso nearby.

Recovery Efforts and Forensic Examination

Chaiwat Boonmee, a volunteer with the local rescue team, said the monitor lizard had dragged the infant’s body under a house, making recovery efforts challenging.

The remains have since been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine, where specialists will perform a post-mortem examination to determine exactly how the baby died.

Authorities believe the baby was no more than two days old before being attacked and likely eaten alive by the hungry reptile.

Resident Mistakes the Body for a Fish

The man who reported the gruesome incident shared how he initially mistook the baby’s remains for a fish caught by the lizard.

When I looked closer and realized it was a baby, I felt physically ill.

The animal had torn it to pieces,” he said.

Police Launch Investigation to Identify the Parents

Police have opened an investigation to find out who the infant’s parents are.

Under Thai law, abandoning a child under the age of nine can carry a prison sentence of up to three years, a fine of roughly £135, or both.

Officials are treating the case with urgency and are exploring whether the baby was already dead before being discovered by the lizard.

Monitor Lizards: Common But Rarely Dangerous to Humans

While monitor lizards are fairly common in Southeast Asia, they generally feed on fish, snakes, and food scraps—and rarely pose a threat to people.

That said, this isn’t the first tragic incident of its kind.

Back in 2020, a similar case unfolded in southern Thailand, where a group of children stumbled across the remains of a newborn near a pond in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The baby had been abandoned and was later eaten by monitor lizards living in the area.

What’s Next?

The current case has left residents shaken, and authorities are calling for anyone with information to come forward.

As forensic experts work to uncover the infant’s cause of death, police are racing against time to find the person—or people—responsible for the abandonment.

The case is being closely monitored as it raises disturbing questions about infant safety and accountability in the region.
