Durban’s beloved Mitchell Park Zoo is temporarily closing its doors for a much-needed upgrade that will kick off on April 1, 2025.
The zoo, which has been a local landmark for over a century, will be getting a facelift to improve safety, aesthetics, and sustainability.
Reasons Behind the Closure
The closure comes as part of an extensive renovation to address issues stemming from the zoo’s aging infrastructure.
As reported by IOL, Mitchell Park Zoo, which has seen over 100 years of service, has been impacted by years of adverse weather conditions.
Additionally, safety concerns—such as unsafe playground equipment and exposed concrete surfaces—played a significant role in the decision to close the zoo temporarily.
What’s Included in the Revamp?
The upgrade will bring several changes to the zoo. New fencing, updated paving, and a refreshed children’s play area are among the planned improvements.
The old, unsafe playground equipment will be replaced with safer options, and the zoo will see new flowerbeds planted throughout the space, enhancing its overall appearance.
The eThekwini Municipality revealed that internal repairs at the zoo will be funded by the City, while external features, such as the new play equipment, are being sponsored by local businesses like the Woodford Group and On the Verge.
These upgrades are being made in collaboration with the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Culture (PRC) Unit.
What About the Animals?
While the zoo is undergoing these renovations, the animals will remain onsite.
However, some animals will be moved around within the zoo when work is being done in their enclosures.
Additionally, some bird species will temporarily be relocated to the nearby Umgeni River Bird Park.
The Future of Mitchell Park Zoo
The zoo’s revamp is expected to breathe new life into this century-old attraction, ensuring its safety, functionality, and appeal for years to come.
Visitors will soon be able to enjoy a refreshed environment that prioritizes both the well-being of the animals and the enjoyment of visitors.
