Michael van Gerwen opens up about coping with divorce and juggling fatherhood while returning to professional darts in the Netherlands

After stepping back from the darts scene this summer, Michael van Gerwen has finally shared an update on how he’s adjusting to life after a personal upheaval.

The three-time world champion had taken a pause from the sport following the announcement of his split from his wife Daphne, ending more than a decade together.

Reflecting on Life Changes

The 36-year-old Dutch star, who began dating Daphne in 2008 and married her in 2014, shares two children, Mike and Zoe.

Speaking candidly about the separation, van Gerwen admitted the break from darts gave him a chance to process the difficult changes in his personal life.

“I’m just human, you know,” he told Dutch outlet AD.

“At some point, you want to think about nice things again, not just be preoccupied with the mess you’re experiencing at that moment.”

He added that while grieving is part of the process, he prefers to focus on enjoying life and finding a sense of closure.

Holidays, Family Time, and the Spotlight

During his summer break, van Gerwen spent time at Tomorrowland and Ibiza, moments some speculated could mean he was losing focus on darts.

He was spotted at a Martin Garrix concert at Ushuaia, one of Ibiza’s iconic beach clubs.

“But I was just on holiday with my kids in Ibiza,” he said.

“Yes, I did go out for a day, but doesn’t everyone do that? People emphasize that, but what others say doesn’t really matter to me.

You have to get on with your life and find closure.”

For van Gerwen, spending quality time with his children has become a priority as he navigates the new reality of co-parenting.

Finding Balance Amid Divorce

Adjusting to a post-divorce routine hasn’t been easy. “Is that working? Not quite yet,” he admitted. “It takes time.

I have all sorts of balls to juggle. I’m still in the middle of the divorce. Not everything will be fine within a few days. You’re dealing with final settlements, the aftermath.

You have to do that carefully, without mistakes.”

Despite the challenges, van Gerwen is gradually finding a rhythm that balances family responsibilities and professional commitments.

Commitment to Darts Remains Strong

Even with a dip in form earlier this year, the darts star reassured fans that his love for the sport hasn’t faded.

“I haven’t done anything for three weeks, but I do that often,” he explained. “I still love darts and I’m not reluctant at all.”

Van Gerwen emphasized that since becoming a father, his children come first, but his career is still important as it allows him to provide for them.

“Ultimately, it’s my livelihood, and if you’re good at darts, you can give more to the kids. It’s all interconnected; I’m very aware of that.”

Looking Ahead

With a renewed focus on family and a steady return to competition, van Gerwen appears ready to reclaim his form on the oche while embracing the next chapter of his life.
