The world of Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic tough guys.

Michael Madsen, known for his gritty roles in Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, died suddenly at his home in Malibu on Thursday. He was 66.

While the cause of death is believed to be cardiac arrest, what’s left in the wake of his passing is a wave of grief, particularly from those who loved him most—including his youngest son, Luke Madsen, who shared a deeply personal message in memory of his dad.

“My Hero Wore a Cowboy Hat” — A Son’s Emotional Goodbye

In a moving Instagram post, Luke shared childhood photos alongside a raw and loving tribute.

“Some people’s heroes wear capes. Mine wore a cowboy hat,” he wrote.

“My hero was a movie star and the coolest, most badass person I know.

But more than that, he was my father.

And he was a damn good one.”

Luke also made sure to remember his late brother Hudson, who died by suicide in 2022, writing:

“Tell Hudson I said hi.”

Family Rushes to His Side After Tragic Discovery

Michael was found unresponsive at his Malibu home after a 911 call early Thursday morning.

Family members, including estranged wife DeAnna and sons Christian, Max, and Luke, gathered at the house shortly after the news broke.

Photos captured by DailyMail.com show an emotional scene outside the property, with relatives comforting one another as they processed the shocking loss.

A Career That Mixed Toughness with Depth

Over the years, Madsen carved out a reputation as one of Hollywood’s go-to actors for gritty, no-nonsense roles.

His longtime collaborations with Quentin Tarantino—in Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood—cemented his legacy.

He also played Sonny Black in Donnie Brasco, starred in numerous indie films, and was working on several new projects at the time of his death.

One of them was a book titled Tears for My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems.

Behind the Fame, Private Struggles

According to longtime lawyer Perry Wander, Michael had been battling alcohol addiction for years.

“He had multiple stints in and out of rehab,” Wander said.

“He wasn’t happy with how his life had turned out.”

Wander also claimed that ongoing legal disputes with DeAnna over finances and child support placed additional stress on the actor, including the revocation of his passport, which limited his ability to work internationally.

A Sister’s Poetic Farewell

Michael’s sister, actress Virginia Madsen, shared her own powerful tribute through Variety:

“My brother was thunder and velvet.

Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw.”

She added:

“We’re not mourning a public figure, but flesh and blood and a ferocious heart.

He was half legend, half lullaby.”

A Life Marked by Tragedy and Legal Turmoil

Madsen’s final years were marked by personal tragedy and legal issues.

His son Hudson, a US Army veteran, took his own life in 2022 shortly after his wife underwent surgery.

Michael was devastated.

“I didn’t see any signs of depression,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

“My last message from him was, ‘I love you, Dad.’”

Madsen later called for a military investigation, believing Hudson was discouraged from seeking mental health help.

Past Arrests and Public Challenges

The actor also had a history of legal troubles, including arrests for DUI and domestic violence, although some charges were later dropped.

In one incident, he was arrested for allegedly fighting with his son over marijuana use, though no charges stuck.

In 2022, he was arrested for trespassing after being evicted from a $5.3 million Malibu home.

The home had been under lease by another party, but Madsen had reportedly been living there.

Complicated Marriages and Public Apologies

Madsen was married multiple times.

His second marriage to DeAnna brought three sons—Luke, Kalvin, and Hudson.

But the relationship was rocky in later years.

He filed for divorce in 2024 and at one point accused DeAnna of contributing to Hudson’s death.

He later retracted the claims in an Instagram statement:

“She had absolutely nothing to do with what happened.

I love my wife and our other four children.

It was a horrible loss… I think my son escaped from a life that didn’t make sense anymore.”

Remembering Michael Madsen for the Artist and Father He Was

In the end, despite the personal demons and tragic turns, Michael Madsen was more than just the tough guy onscreen.

He was a father, a brother, and, to those who knew him, a complex and poetic soul.

His passing has left a hole in the hearts of many, but especially in the family who knew him best.

As Luke wrote in his tribute:

“Love you, Pops. I’ll see you again someday.”
