Mexico’s police set a record cocaine bust

Authorities in Mexico City reported Tuesday’s seizure of 1.6 tonnes of cocaine, thought to have originated in Colombia, as the greatest such find in the city.

Omar Garcia Harfuch, the director of security for the capital, reported that police discovered the drugs in two trailers on a roadway near the city.

It was “by far the largest cocaine seizure in Mexico City,”

He informed the press.

Initial investigations indicate that the consignment came from Colombia to Mexico’s Pacific port of Puerto Escondido by sea.

According to Garcia Harfuch, some of the cocaine was allegedly intended for distribution in the capital and some of it for export to the US.

He stated that four alleged gang members from northwest Mexico were detained.

It is the second significant operation against drug cartels in July in Mexico City.

In the south of the capital, police detained 14 people and seized guns and drugs.

Most people in custody are being kept on the grounds that they may be members of the notorious Sinaloa cartel.
