He was a class apart from his rivals and extended his lead over teammate Sergio Perez to 14 points in a championship that is currently a two-horse race.

Despite the win, Verstappen insisted that he tries to be as close as possible to perfection and was pleased to have performed better than expected.

Sergio Perez was expected to be the race favourite, having parked his car on pole position.

In contrast, Verstappen started in ninth place after failing to record a fast lap when Charles Leclerc crashed and brought an early end to qualifying.

However, Perez was unable to match his teammate’s pace and admitted that he was at a loss to explain Verstappen’s superior performance.

He acknowledged that the team needs to understand why Verstappen was stronger and get back to their normal level for Imola.
