Matric students in South Africa face tough choices after disappointing results as options for improvement are available

The wait is almost over as the Matric results for the Class of 2024 will be released on 13 and 14 January by the IEB and the Department of Basic Education.

For many students, this is an exciting time, but for others, it can also be a source of anxiety, especially if they feel they might not pass or achieve the results they were hoping for.

How to Cope with the Emotions After Matric Results

If you didn’t pass or are disappointed by your results, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has been offering resources and support for students experiencing stress and anxiety as the results approach.

They remind you that no grade or result defines who you are, and your mental health and wellbeing are far more important.

SADAG encourages teens to take a step back, stay positive, and process their emotions.

Failure, they say, is not the end—it’s just a bump in the road.

It’s essential to acknowledge your feelings but not let them hold you back from moving forward.

You have options, and there’s no shame in seeking support.

What Are Your Options If You Didn’t Pass?

For those who didn’t meet the mark or want to improve their Matric results, there are several paths forward:

  1. Rewrite Your Matric Exams: You can choose to rewrite your exams if you want to improve your results. This option is available to:
    • Students who already have a Matric Certificate but want to improve their grades.
    • Those who missed exams due to illness or family issues.
    • Students who are under the age of 21.

The Department of Basic Education offers a “Second Chance Programme,” and registration is still open for those who wish to apply.

However, this option is not available for those looking to rewrite four subjects to get the lowest pass level.

  2. Request a Remark of Your Papers: If you’re confident your results don’t reflect your performance, you can apply for a remark through the government portal.

What to Do if You Need to Repeat the Year

Failing Matric doesn’t mean your education journey is over.

Here are some alternatives:

  1. Repeat Grade 12 at a High School: If you are under 21, you can re-enroll at a high school to repeat Grade 12.
  2. Private Higher Education Institutions: If you’re over 21, you can repeat your subjects through a private institution.
  3. Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET): You can enroll in an ABET course to earn a Matric Equivalent qualification, which is recognized at the same NQF level as the Matric Certificate.
  4. Courses Without Matric: Many courses are available for students over the age of 16 who have a Grade 10 or Grade 11 certificate. These courses do not require a Matric pass.

Dealing with Overwhelming Feelings

It’s okay to feel anxious, especially if your results bring up strong emotions.
