Matheus Cunha, the talented forward for Wolverhampton Wanderers, has set his sights on a move to a bigger club this summer.
Despite interest from top Premier League teams in January, Cunha decided to stay with Wolves, contributing significantly to their battle against relegation.
A Key Contributor in Wolves’ Fight for Survival
This season, Cunha has been in fine form, netting 13 goals in 26 Premier League appearances, which caught the attention of several high-profile clubs.
Despite a new four-and-a-half-year contract signed just last month, which included a release clause of £62.5 million, many believe this was a strategic move to protect his transfer value.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest all expressed interest in January, but Cunha made the decision to stay and help Wolves avoid relegation.
Now, with the team sitting comfortably nine points above the relegation zone in 17th place, Cunha feels the time is right to seek new opportunities.
Choosing Loyalty Over Immediate Glory
In an interview with The Guardian, Cunha opened up about his decision to stay with Wolves.
“I had a lot of offers in January, but I wouldn’t feel right if I had left,” he shared.
“Some things are out of your control, but I couldn’t abandon the club in the middle of a tough season when we were fighting to stay up.
Now, we’re close to achieving that goal, but I’ve always been clear that I want to take the next step in my career.”
Cunha’s desire to push for titles and achieve greater success has become a driving force.
“I want to fight for big things,” he continued. “I know I have the potential to do so.”
Potential Suitors and Strategic Moves
Cunha’s comments come after a notable development at one of his potential suitors.
Arsenal recently appointed Andrea Berta as their new sporting director, a move that could spark further interest in the Brazilian forward.
Berta, who played a key role in bringing Cunha to Atlético Madrid from Hertha Berlin in 2021, has an established track record of securing valuable signings.
His tenure at Atlético Madrid saw him make significant acquisitions, including Rodri, Antoine Griezmann, and Jan Oblak, while also profiting from player sales.
Now, with a change in leadership at Arsenal, it remains to be seen whether Cunha could be a part of the club’s plans for the future.
While he continues to focus on his performances with Wolves, the possibility of a summer transfer looms large as he eyes a move to one of the Premier League’s top teams.
