Marseille forward Mason Greenwood earns strong backing from team-mate Timothy Weah as he pushes for an England comeback ahead of the World Cup

Talk around Marseille is heating up after one of Mason Greenwood’s team-mates expressed confidence that the forward could still force his way back into England’s plans ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

Greenwood’s Stunning Form in France

Since settling into life at Marseille, the former Manchester United striker has been playing with the confidence of a man who has rediscovered his groove.
This season alone, Greenwood has already hit double figures in Ligue 1, scoring 10 goals in just 12 league games — a run of form that has turned heads across Europe.

His overall numbers since making the switch to France say even more: 33 goals in 53 appearances, putting him among the top-performing forwards on the continent.

Leaving Manchester Behind and Rebuilding His Career

Greenwood’s time at Manchester United ended in 2024 after a long spell away from the squad.
He had been arrested in early 2022 and faced several serious allegations, but the case did not move forward and all charges were dropped more than a year later.
Despite that outcome, United chose not to reintegrate him, and the England setup also kept its distance.

Determined to revive his professional journey, Greenwood made the move to Marseille, where he has rebuilt his career piece by piece.

Dreaming of an England Return

Even though he was recently approached to represent Jamaica, Greenwood has reportedly kept the door open for an England return.
He earned one senior cap back in 2020, coming on against Iceland during Gareth Southgate’s tenure, and those close to him say the ambition of wearing the Three Lions shirt again hasn’t faded.

Timothy Weah Publicly Backs His Team-Mate

Among those cheering Greenwood on is teammate Timothy Weah, son of legendary striker and former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah.
Weah spoke warmly about playing alongside Greenwood and made it clear he believes the Marseille sharpshooter has what it takes to make his way back into the England squad.

He told The Sun that sharing the pitch with Greenwood has been “special,” praising both his talent and his attitude.
Weah also said he hopes the forward gets rewarded for his form with a national team call-up.

Making Waves in Europe Together

The pair showcased their chemistry once again during Marseille’s recent 2–1 Champions League win over Newcastle, where both men operated on the wings around veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored twice.
With performances like that on the biggest stage, Greenwood’s case for a comeback becomes harder to ignore.

Has Tuchel Closed the Door?

England head coach Thomas Tuchel, who took over earlier this year, hasn’t directly dismissed the idea of Greenwood returning.
When asked in September — around the time Greenwood declined Jamaica’s approach — Tuchel explained that the forward hadn’t been part of England’s recent conversations but didn’t completely shut the door.
Still, he made it clear that Greenwood is not currently a priority for the national squad.

Looking Ahead

For now, Greenwood can only keep doing what he’s been doing: scoring goals, staying focused, and letting his football speak for him.
If he continues this level of form deep into the season, the England debate is only going to get louder.
