The new Premier League season got off to a rollercoaster start at Anfield on Friday evening, with fans witnessing both emotional tributes and controversial moments right from the kick-off.
Before the game even began, Liverpool paid homage to former striker Diogo Jota, setting an emotional tone for the night.
But the drama didn’t take long to shift to the pitch, as Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi found himself at the center of early controversy.
Senesi Avoids Red Despite Blatant Handball
Just 14 minutes into the match, VAR became the focal point for fans once again.
Senesi appeared to deliberately stop a clear goalscoring chance for Bournemouth’s corner opponents, as Hugo Ekitike raced through on goal.
The incident unfolded with Mo Salah sending a precise through ball towards Ekitike.
Senesi initially tried to control it with his knee, but then the ball struck his hand in what looked like a clear attempt to block the striker’s path.
Referee and VAR Face Scrutiny
The Liverpool players, including Virgil van Dijk, immediately appealed to referee Anthony Taylor for a red card.
The decision was referred to the VAR team at Stockley Park.
After review, officials judged the handball to be accidental — a verdict that sparked immediate outrage.
Commentator and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back:
“The Bournemouth defender handled the ball. That’s handball. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
It’s just a reaction as a defender, but that’s handball.”
Fans Slam VAR Decision on Social Media
Liverpool supporters were equally incensed, turning to social media to voice their disbelief.
Some called VAR a “laughing stock” for failing to send Senesi off:
-
“PGMOL an absolute laughing stock just 13 minutes into the new Premier League season as a blatant handball and red card ignored by VAR, despite the whole world watching.”
-
“Senesi playing the wrong sport here. Liverpool rightfully aggrieved.”
-
“15 minutes into the new season and already one of the worst refereeing decisions you could think of! Senesi getting away with playing basketball!”
-
“THAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST BLATANT HANDBALL YOU WILL EVER SEE. HOW DID THEY NOT SEE THIS?”
Ekitike Opens His Premier League Account
Despite the early controversy, Hugo Ekitike, making his Premier League debut, eventually found the net.
He scored later in the first half, opening his account for Liverpool and celebrating by honoring Diogo Jota.
The French striker held up his hands in the shape of Jota’s number 20, a touching tribute to the Portuguese forward at Anfield.
