Marco Rubio challenges CBS host in Washington as he defends Trump’s Alaska meeting with Vladimir Putin and upcoming White House talks with Zelenskyy

After President Trump’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Secretary of State Marco Rubio spent Sunday taking aim at what he called misleading media narratives.

In multiple interviews, Rubio defended the administration’s diplomatic approach and questioned the framing of news coverage.

Sparring with CBS and ABC

Rubio faced tough questioning from CBS host Margaret Brennan, who pressed him for details about the Trump-Putin meeting and the upcoming White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Rubio dismissed suggestions that Trump would bully Zelensky into a poor deal, explaining that European leaders were invited to the talks after weeks of coordination.

He emphasized that any peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine would require concessions from both sides.

“If one side gets everything they want, that’s called surrender.

That’s not what’s happening here,” Rubio said, reinforcing that neither country is on the verge of giving in.

ABC host Martha Raddatz similarly asked Rubio about concessions from Putin.

Rubio declined to disclose specifics, responding sharply, “I wouldn’t name them on your program. Why would I do that?”

Social Media and Public Reactions

Rubio’s firm responses drew praise online. Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk applauded him for standing his ground against CBS and ABC, criticizing journalists who seemed to root for peace talks to fail.

X users echoed the sentiment, with @jaimewildshark writing that the media was twisting the narrative, while @VigilantFox said Rubio “absolutely humiliated CBS’ Margaret Brennan.”

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich also weighed in, noting that analysts and media commentators were misrepresenting the situation.

He called Rubio’s stance “just right” and advised patience, describing the Alaska talks as only “the opening act in a multi-act play.”

Upcoming Diplomatic Meetings

Looking ahead, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Monday.

Leaders from Britain, France, and Germany are also expected to attend, signaling continued high-level engagement in the efforts to broker peace.
