Manqoba Mngqithi Takes Over as Head Coach of Golden Arrows in KZN Following His Unexpected Dismissal from Mamelodi Sundowns

Manqoba Mngqithi is back in familiar territory as he takes on the role of head coach at Golden Arrows, just a few months after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns.

His return marks an exciting new chapter, and it’s a role he’s no stranger to.

Mngqithi has already had two stints at the club, including a memorable one in 2009 when he led Arrows to an incredible 6-0 victory in the MTN 8 final against Ajax Cape Town.

Now, as he takes charge once more, Mngqithi is aiming to elevate Golden Arrows to greater heights, hoping to bring the club back to the competitive level it once had.

Aiming for the Top Half of the Table

Mngqithi’s primary mission at Golden Arrows is clear: he wants to push the team into the top half of the league standings.

Currently, Arrows are sitting in 11th place, and a lot of work is needed to get them into a more promising position.

There’s also a noticeable shift in Mngqithi’s coaching style since his departure in 2013.

Back then, he was still finding his feet, but after years of success as Mamelodi Sundowns’ assistant and co-coach, Mngqithi returns with an abundance of experience and a clear vision for the club’s future.

Golden Arrows have remained a mid-table team in recent seasons, with their best finish coming in 2021 when they placed 4th.

However, the task now is to build on those foundations and take the club forward.

Mngqithi has been vocal about his desire not to find himself battling relegation at this stage of his career.

He shared his thoughts with SABC Sport last December, saying, “I want to work with a team that has big ambitions — not just to avoid relegation or secure a top-eight finish, but with the long-term goal of competing for the league title.”

While a league title might not be on the cards just yet, Mngqithi is focused on ensuring that Golden Arrows can make the top eight, setting the stage for future success.

Facing Sundowns in His First Match

In a surprising twist, Mngqithi’s first match back at Golden Arrows will be against his former team, Mamelodi Sundowns.

His unexpected departure from Sundowns still resonates with many, and this match will undoubtedly be an emotional one for him.

As he takes charge of Golden Arrows for the first time, there’s no better way to start than by securing a victory against his old club.

Mngqithi’s first game will be a test of not only his tactical acumen but also his ability to motivate a team that has been inconsistent over the years.

With his previous success at Arrows, Mngqithi will be hoping to inspire the team to a strong start and push them towards a return to the top half of the league.

Can he reignite the glory days of Golden Arrows? Only time will tell.
