After a frustrating season in front of goal, Manchester United are ready to revamp their attacking line—and they’re going big.
The club has now set their sights squarely on 22-year-old Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig, making the Slovenian striker their number one target.
Goodbye Watkins, Hello Sesko
United were previously weighing up a move for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, even testing the waters with a £45 million offer.
But Villa stood firm, making it clear that prying away their main man would require a lot more cash.
Instead of pushing further, United pivoted to Sesko, who brings a different kind of profile—taller, younger, and potentially more dynamic.
Opening Talks and Exploring Options
While no formal bid has been placed yet, United have already made contact with Leipzig through intermediaries to get the ball rolling.
The striker’s price tag is reportedly in the range of £60–70 million, with possible add-ons on top.
There’s also the possibility of a part-exchange deal, with United willing to offer one of their own players to sweeten the deal.
Could Hojlund Be Part of the Deal?
One option on the table is using Rasmus Hojlund as a makeweight.
After joining for £72 million, the Danish forward has yet to make a consistent impact, and United may be ready to cut their losses.
Others who could be moved on include the so-called “bomb squad” players: Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia, and Jadon Sancho—who already has Bundesliga experience with Borussia Dortmund.
Impressive Stats Make Sesko a Tempting Prospect
At just 22, Sesko has already racked up 39 goals in 87 matches for Leipzig and netted 16 times in 41 appearances for Slovenia.
That kind of return, combined with his towering 6ft 5in frame, gives United reason to believe he could become a long-term solution up front.
Vivell Pushes for a Familiar Face
Christopher Vivell, United’s recruitment director, is believed to be a big fan of Sesko.
He previously worked at both Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, giving him first-hand knowledge of the player’s potential and character—something that could work in United’s favor during negotiations.
Newcastle Also in the Mix
United won’t have a free run at Sesko, though.
Newcastle are also in the hunt, and they’ve reportedly had conversations with both Leipzig and Sesko’s camp.
Their interest may heat up further if Alexander Isak makes a switch to Liverpool, which would leave them needing a new frontman.
Other Striker Options Ruled Out
Sesko wasn’t United’s only consideration this summer.
They were also keen on Ipswich’s Liam Delap before he signed with Chelsea. Alexander Isak and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson were also looked at, but both were deemed too pricey.
And despite rumors, United are not considering a Garnacho-Jackson swap.
Goalkeeper Situation Still in Flux
Up front isn’t the only area United are trying to sort out.
With Andre Onana sidelined due to a hamstring issue, the club is actively evaluating their goalkeeping options.
Villa reportedly rejected their request to take Emi Martinez on loan.
Other names linked include PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and John Victor from Brazilian side Botafogo.
What’s Next for United?
As the summer transfer window heats up, United are moving fast to fix last season’s weak spots.
Whether it’s landing Sesko or finding cover for Onana, they’re clearly in the mood for big decisions and bold moves.
