For decades, Lulu has kept quiet about the truth behind her relationship with David Bowie.
Now, at 76, the legendary singer has decided it’s time to set the record straight.
Speaking with rare honesty, she confirmed for the very first time that she and Bowie did share an intimate moment back in the 1970s—something she had always chosen to keep private until now.
A Night She Remembers—Sort Of
Looking back on that evening, Lulu admitted that her memory is a little hazy.
She described herself as being “slightly tipsy” at the time but insisted that the connection between her and Bowie went deeper than just physical attraction.
“You know what, I’ve never said ‘Yes, I had sex with David Bowie’ until now,” she confessed. “It wasn’t just about sex.
It was about being seen, being understood, and being honoured by someone like him.”
Fear and Boundaries Around Intimacy
Her revelation comes alongside excerpts from her new memoir If Only You Knew, where Lulu gets deeply personal about her fears growing up.
She admitted that as a young star in the 1960s, she was afraid of sex, calling it something that had been made to feel “shameful” in her home.
She explained that she spent much of her youth fantasizing about romance rather than embracing real intimacy, admitting she was “in love with the idea of love” rather than the act itself.
A Lifetime of Struggles and Survival
Lulu’s story goes far beyond her relationship with Bowie.
In her memoir and recent TV appearances, she has been candid about her lifelong battle with alcoholism.
Appearing on This Morning, she fought back tears as she revealed how her father also struggled with drinking at a time when there was little support available.
“It really makes me sad when I think that my parents didn’t have the help I have today,” she said, reflecting on how differently things could have turned out for her dad.
The Turning Point
Her own breaking point came in November 2013, when she finally admitted to herself and her family that she needed help.
Despite being able to hide her drinking from friends—and even her own son—Lulu confessed to her sister during a quiet family conversation that she was struggling.
That moment of honesty changed everything. With her sister’s encouragement, she checked herself into rehab the very next day.
“Sometimes things are decided for us,” she explained. “I struggled for years in secret, but once the truth came out, I knew it was time.”
A Story of Resilience
From global fame with her hit “Shout” to private struggles behind closed doors, Lulu’s life has been filled with highs and lows.
Today, she’s using her platform to share her story with honesty and courage—whether it’s her secret romance with David Bowie or her personal journey of recovery.
For Lulu, it all comes back to love: being loved, giving love, and embracing the deeper human connections that have defined her life.
