Takeshige Sugimoto, a partner at a prominent law firm, has faced serious consequences after engaging in inappropriate behavior toward a junior female colleague.

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) revealed that Sugimoto sent an astounding 989 messages to the junior legal consultant within just two months, attempting to persuade her to enter a romantic relationship.

His communications included unsolicited confessions of “love” and inappropriate comments about their meetings being more pleasurable than sexual encounters.

Despite her clear disinterest, he persisted in expressing his feelings, even after she repeatedly rejected his advances.

An Unwelcome Start

Sugimoto’s misconduct began on the first day of the junior consultant, referred to as Person B, at Bird and Bird LLP.

He extended an invitation to dinner, claiming it was customary for new employees.

During their initial interactions, he insisted on walking her home, disregarding her requests for privacy.

This pattern of behavior only escalated, with Sugimoto organizing work meetings that quickly turned into personal conversations.

Lasting Impact

The tribunal heard that Sugimoto’s relentless messaging had a profound effect on his colleague, who felt trapped by his seniority.

Messages like “I literally fall in love with you” came just days after she joined the firm, showcasing the immediacy of his feelings.

On multiple occasions, he sent late-night texts professing how spending time with her was the highlight of his life.

This persistent pressure included waiting outside her home and trying to accompany her during errands, further crossing personal boundaries.

Lack of Reporting

Interestingly, the junior employee did not report Sugimoto’s behavior at the time, largely due to his position within the firm.

However, in May 2019, concerns about his conduct prompted Bird and Bird to initiate an internal investigation.

Ultimately, Sugimoto admitted during the tribunal proceedings that he had been pursuing a romantic relationship with her, acknowledging the power dynamics at play.

Consequences and Moving Forward

The tribunal concluded that Sugimoto’s actions demonstrated a significant level of culpability.

As an experienced lawyer and partner, he exploited the imbalance of power created by his seniority to take advantage of a vulnerable colleague.

Consequently, he was banned from practicing law in the UK for five years and ordered to pay £36,000 to cover the costs of the investigation.

Now, he has relocated to work at a law firm in Japan, leaving behind a controversial chapter in his career.
