Lagos, WATERAID Organise Two-Day Workshop For Stakeholders On Water Hygiene

Nigeria – The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) and WaterAid Nigeria have organised a two-day workshop, themed “Political Economy Analysis and Capacity of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Lagos State”, for stakeholders in the water sector at Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Conference Hall.

In her opening address, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Funke Adepoju, revealed that the State Government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with WaterAid Nigeria to collaborate on the improvement and expansion of access to safe water and sustainable sanitation for residents of Lagos, through capacity building and performance improvement plans for stakeholders.

Mrs. Adepoju explained that in order to actualise the improvement and expansion of access to safe water and sustainable sanitation, a Political Economy Analysis (PEA) of the water, sanitation and hygiene sector in Lagos State become expedient, stressing that water is essential to human existence while its management is critical to sustainable development.

She said the workshop was a continuation of the focus group discussion in which 27 relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the State government and stakeholders in the Wastewater Management, Borehole Drillers Association and Table Water Producers Association participated actively to analyse and validate the findings of the Focus Group Discussion/key informant interview component of PEA held from April 14 to 16, 2021.

According to her, the workshop was designed to review the change and define objectives of the sector, analyse the actors and factors influencing the sector, create a PEA map, analyse the PEA map and identify pathways to change and map solutions and actions required to effect change in the water sector.

She appreciated Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his unflinching support for the activities of the Commission and the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, for his commitment towards ensuring that the Commission is able to take its rightful place in the course of actualising its mandate of managing water and wastewater in the State.

The Executive Secretary also appreciated participants for their presence and contributions towards the actualisation of a strong and viable water sector in Lagos.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Adebayo Alao, Head WaterAid Nigeria, thanked the State Government for its concern and effective efforts to provide safe water for residents, through the collaboration between the State Government and the organisation.
