Lagos technical education board partners with SLOT and GIZ to train youths in computer engineering

The Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), has entered into a partnership agreement with SLOT Foundation and Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Organisationen (GIZ) towards the training of youths in Software and Hardware Service Engineering across the State.

Speaking at a meeting held at the LASTVEB complex in Ikeja, the Executive Secretary of LASTVEB, Ms. Moronke Azeez, stated that the Board is focused on public-private partnerships with notable organisations to achieve the Lagos State T.H.E.M.E.S. Development Agenda, which is centred on employment creation, human capacity development and arming youths with requisite skills for today’s world of work.

She asserted that the tripartite partnership aims to develop the skills of interested youths in software and hardware engineering in computers and any technical skills.

Her words: “This partnership is implemented by GIZ Nigeria, under the ‘skills for Work (#S4W) Programmes’ which are for short vocational intensive courses to create employment and development of small businesses. We will give the opportunity to 60 per cent of female and 40 per cent male youths to participate in the course”.

“The reason we are focusing more on females is to encourage them and negate the belief that software and hardware engineering is only for males. We hope that by the end of the nine months programmes, participants will have developed and built their skills, then move to SLOT to do their apprenticeship before embarking on their personal businesses”, she said.

Ms. Azeez further explained that the partnership between LASTVEB, GIZ and SLOT, which is expected to commence in April, has been in the works for six months to ensure that the curriculum and training to be delivered meets global best standards and the 21st-century industry requirements, including training on phones, laptop software and hardware engineering for beneficiaries.

The Executive Secretary explained that LASTVEB created the Skills for Work programme, a short term vocational training programme, to equip youths between 15 and 24 years old with viable skills for immediate employment, stressing that one of the objectives is to deliver employable skills to Lagos citizens as it oversees technical and vocational education in the State.

While noting that there are five technical colleges across the State consisting of over 8,000 students between the ages of 15 and 18 years old, Azeez informed interested youths to register and participate in the free training programme by visiting https://lastveb.org.ng/registration-form-skill4work/ or follow the Twitter handle https://twitter.com/OfficialLASTVEB

In his remarks, Mr. Jonathan Uzomba, Head, Marketing and Communication, SLOT Systems Ltd., disclosed that SLOT had trained over 2,000 youths on technical skills, software and hardware engineering across the country and will continue to equip youths with these needed skills to become sound entrepreneurs.

“We have trained over 2,000 young people and they are all employed by becoming their bosses. The participants should be expecting quality and professional training at the completion of the project. Our track records as a company were instrumental in this recognition by GIZ Nigeria for the initiative. This is an opportunity for participants to acquire technical skills through this training to navigate the world of work”, Uzomba stated.

The event also had in attendance Ilawole Oluwatosin, Technical Advisor, GIZ; Collins Uwadia, Head of Academy, Ezeigbo SLOT Foundation and LASTVEB management staff.
