Kyiv has decided to continue the defense of Bakhmut (Artemovsk in Russian), according to a statement released by the Office of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Zelensky reportedly asked Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny and the commander of Khortytsya operational-strategic group of troops Alexander Syrsky whether it was worth continuing the defense of Bakhmut.
Both Zaluzhny and Syrsky responded that Ukraine should continue the defensive operation and plan to strengthen the position of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the city.
Earlier, it was reported that Zaluzhny had proposed to begin the withdrawal of troops from the city. Despite this, the decision to continue the defense of Bakhmut has been made.
