What was meant to be a relaxing Labor Day weekend outing for families and tourists turned into chaos when a pizza shop worker was brutally stabbed on the famous Santa Monica Pier.
The attacker, who witnesses say appeared to be homeless, fled the scene and remains on the run.
Worker Targeted on His Lunch Break
The victim, an employee at Pier Pizza & Subs, had just stepped out for his lunch break on Sunday evening when the unprovoked assault happened.
Police say the man was stabbed several times in the back shortly before 5 p.m. on Ocean Front Walk, a bustling strip usually filled with vacationers.
Witnesses Left Horrified
Tourists and bystanders watched in shock as the attack unfolded in broad daylight.
Disturbing footage later shared with Fox News showed the injured man sitting on the ground, visibly dazed, while paramedics worked quickly to stabilize him.
Thankfully, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Suspect Still at Large
By the time Santa Monica police arrived, the attacker had already disappeared.
Investigators are now piecing together witness statements and reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of tracking him down.
The suspect’s identity has not yet been confirmed.
Locals Say Violence Is Nothing New
For many residents and workers near the pier, the stabbing didn’t come as a complete shock.
Business owner Jehrid Hale admitted that while the attack was tragic, it wasn’t surprising given recent safety concerns in the area.
He worries daily for his employees, coworkers, and even his partner.
Calls for More Police Presence
Hale and other community members believe a stronger police presence could help deter crime, especially when the pier draws large crowds.
John Alle from the Santa Monica Coalition echoed that view, suggesting even a small increase in visible patrols could “curtail” violence.
He even went so far as to suggest issuing travel advisories for tourists.
Tourists Share Their Experiences
Visitors like Lashana Lewis, however, painted a slightly different picture.
She told reporters that in her experience, most people on the pier generally keep to themselves, even late into the night.
Still, the attack has left many uneasy about safety in one of California’s most popular coastal destinations.
