The shooting of Conservative MP Sir David Amess on Friday, October 15 is being investigated as a terrorist event, according to UK authorities.

On Friday, Sir David was stabbed many times at his constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and a 25-year-old British man was detained on suspicion of murder at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police have stated the homicide has a possible nexus to Islamist extremism in a statement released on Saturday morning, October 16.

According to reports, the lawmaker appeared to be of Somali descent.

The Met said officers are carrying out searches at two addresses in the London area and are not seeking anyone else over the death.

The police say they believed the man, who is in custody in Essex, acted alone but inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are still ongoing.
